What is the difference between an “obsession” and a “collection” or “acquirer” and “collector”? How might private collections differ from collections held for the public trust? Together we will explore these questions while studying in depth personal collections, current Asheville Art Museum exhibitions, selected films and books. The course includes a tour of the Museum. thru May 2 - Charles Counts: Retrospective Exhibition - Celebrating the life and work of Charles Counts, this show features 146 objects including textiles, pottery, paintings, as well as photographs and other archival material. Charles Counts was an expert potter, weaver, teacher and writer. He influenced countless artists and brought worldwide attention to American crafts and the importance of keeping handcrafts alive. Along with his partner, Rubynelle, he operated the production and training center in Rising Fawn, GA for 25 years. Counts became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1956. He was active in the organization, serving on many committees and the board of trustees. He cared deeply about the Guild and its mission to serve members and the region. - Lakeview Senior Center Hiking Group - The Lakeview Center is continuing to host weekly hikes. The hikes will be guided and will take us to many of the local trails of the immediate area. This group meets on Tuesday’s at our Winter time of 10:00am at the Lakeview Senior Center. Each hike will continue to last between 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Please bring water, dress in layers and comfy shoes. All levels are welcome. Transportation is provided, call ahead of time during inclement weather. This is a free program. February 9 - Economic Outlook Breakfast - On Tuesday, February 9th, the Chamber will hold the annual Economic Outlook Breakfast at The Cedars, 227 7th Avenue East, Hendersonville. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am. The program, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, a Wells Fargo Company, will begin at 8:00 am. Adam York, Wells Fargo and Company Economist, will be the speaker. York, based in Charlotte, is responsible for writing indicator reports, conducting research, and producing commentary on U.S. consumer, residential real estate, and housing markets. He also contributes to the company's U.S. macroeconomic outlook report. Adam joined the company in 2006 as a economic analyst and was subsequently promoted to his current postion. His economic commentary has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Business Week, and the Bloomberg News. He is also a frequent guest on radio programs usch as Marketplace on National Public Radio, Associated Press, Bloomberg, and WSJ Radio. Adam earned in B.A. in economics from Davidson College. February 9 - Flat Rock Playhouse Gardening Club - The Gardening Club of Flat Rock Playhouse will host an informal coffee meeting on Tuesday, February 9th at 10:30 am, at the Playhouse. February 9 - Pastyme Benefit Concert for Haiti - Pastyme, an eight-voice a cappella ensemble which includes both Ken Wilson and me, will be offering a benefit concert for the people of Haiti next week. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. The concert will be held next Tuesday, February 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Basilica of St. Lawrence in downtown Asheville. February 11 thru February 25 - Meals for Hope - New Choices is an empowerment program for displaced homemakers in need of counseling and assistance in order to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Volunteers assist in cooking a meal for 15-25 women and children attending bi-weekly "Circles of Hope" meetings. Project tasks also include serving the meal and cleaning up the kitchen. Volunteers should dress for kitchen work with closed toe shoes and long hair pulled back. YWCA provides all supplies. Volunteers are welcome to share the meal that they help cook. Youth 13-15 welcome with adult supervision. February 11 - UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Talk on “What Kind of Jew Was Jesus?” - UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies will host a talk on “What Kind of Jew was Jesus? How Texts and Archeology Tell Us a New Story,” by noted religious scholar James Tabor, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center. Tabor will explore the historical Jesus within the context of his Jewish first century environment, based on textual and archaeological evidence. The event is free and open to the public. Tabor, who holds a doctorate from the University of Chicago, held positions at the University of Notre Dame and the College of William and Mary before joining the staff of UNC Charlotte in 1989, where he currently serves as department chair of religious studies. Tabor has combined his work on ancient texts with extensive field work in archaeology in Israel and Jordan, including work at Qumran, Sepphoris, Masada, Wadi el-Yabis, the “John the Baptist” cave at Suba and the “Tomb of the Shroud” in Jerusalem. He is currently involved in excavating at Mt Zion in Jerusalem. Tabor is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books, including his newest book, “The Paul Factor: How Paul Shaped All We Think about Everything,” which will be published this year. Tabor has also been featured in several TV documentaries, including PBS Frontline’s “Apocalypse!” and “The Lost Tomb of Jesus” on Discovery Channel. February 13 - Bonding Blankets - Help make lovies for premature babies served by Mission Health and Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A lovie is a tiny blanket that a new mother sleeps with for several nights so it acquires her scent. The lovie is then placed in the incubator with the newborn so that the baby can start bonding with the mother while he/she is in the hospital. Sewing skills are helpful, but not required. Instructions will be given at the project. February 13 - Valentine 5K - Whether you are looking for love or just to get some exercise on this Valentines Day the Black Mountain Recreation and Parks department is happy to announce the Eleventh annual Valentine run on Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 2:00pm. The run which is 3.1 miles is set in a quiet neighborhood in Black Mountain and leads you down the paved Oaks Trail and back. You will then return to where it all began Black Mountain Recreation Park off of Blue Ridge Road. Runners can enter this race as a single or as a pair. There are prizes for over all male and female, top three in each age group and top pair in the couple’s category. February 15 - “Boot(y) Camp” - Training will be focused on core strengthening in this class that begins Feb. 15, 5:30-6:30 a.m., and runs Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Fridays at the Jewish Community Center, 236 Charlotte St., Asheville.
