thru January 9 - Sewell Sillman: Pushing Limits - Sewell Sillman: Pushing Limits celebrates the life and work of groundbreaking artist Sewell Sillman (1924 - 1992). In the late 1940s, Sillman studied with Josef Albers at Black Mountain College and continued to work with Albers until the 1970s. Sillman absorbed Albers's approach to color, design, drawing and education over the decades of their work together, bringing Albers's lessons to bear on his own art and teaching. This exhibition features many of Sillman's graceful abstract drawings and watercolors alongside powerful color studies.

thru September 12 - Biltmore's Flower Carpet - Jewel-tone colors of stained glass are the inspiration for this year’s Flower Carpet event at Biltmore, set for Aug. 20 through Sept. 12, on the South Terrace of Biltmore House. Biltmore’s third annual Flower Carpet – made up of more than 100,000 plants – takes its shape and color from a set of 1880s stained glass windows created by innovative artist and interior designer John La Farge. These windows, part of George Vanderbilt’s vast art collection, are now on display at Biltmore’s new Antler Hill Village. September 7 - Helping Haiti - Local physician Tim Plaut will lead a panel discussion of regional medical and volunteer service people who recently worked in earthquake ravaged Haiti through the Mission Manna project. This is the first in a series of four discussions that comprise the Fall 2010 World Affairs Program, co-sponsored by the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) and the World Affairs Council. September 8 thru October 6 - Bird Watching 101 - Learn how to identify the birds of western North Carolina and have fun doing it. Over the course of five, 1-hour programs, bird expert Jamie Cameron will lead discussions on choosing binoculars, field guides and other birding equipment, as well as the easy steps to identifying birds, birds of the Black Mountain area throughout the season and suggestions on how to make your backyard a bird sanctuary. The last session will be a guided bird hike with Jamie, scheduled to coincide with peak fall migration. September 23 - LENBURG TO DELIVER 2010 ANDY SUMMERS MEMORIAL LECTURE AT WWC - Jim Lenburg, emeritus professor of history at Mars Hill College, will deliver Warren Wilson College’s annual Andy Summers Memorial Lecture on Sept. 23.
