thru December 6 - Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed - he Asheville Art Museum is proud to present Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed. Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed will examine different aspects of late 20th and early 21st century Cherokee carving. It will include ritual objects, functional wares and pieces designed to be sold to tourists and collectors. The exhibition will include both stone and wood carvings and focuses on artists working in Western North Carolina today.

thru December 3 - Mountain Sculptors Annual Exhibition - Vadim Bora Gallery hosts the sixth annual group exhibition of Mountain Sculptors in “METAMORPHOSIS.” An exceptional gathering of ideas and objects from the first seed of the creative thought, rendered in drawings, models and maquettes to the finished work. The exhibit opens November 6 and runs through December 3, 2009. thru December 24 - Ride the Polar Express - Pajama clad passengers will board trains bound for the North Pole at The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad this holiday season! The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad anticipates the event will draw nearly 45,000 passengers! The Polar Express train rides begin November 6 and run through December 24. The rides are based on the beloved children’s book, by Chris Van Allsburg, and the holiday feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures about a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. thru December 11 - Senior Treks - This low impact trekking club offers leisurely-paced hikes designed with seniors in mind. Meet at the Recreation Office, 72 Gashes Creek Rd. at 9:30 a.m. on trip day. Bring lunch, water and proper clothing. Registration required. Hikers should be in good physical condition. Cost is $2 per hiker per trip for transportation. Nov. 13, Montreat Hike We’ll work our way along the Trestle trail in Montreat. Some uphill and rocky paths on this 2-3 mile out and back trail. Van ride is approximately 20 minutes. Dec. 11, Warren Wilson River Trail A 4 mile easy trail along the Swannanoa River at the campus of Warren Wilson College. Van ride is approximately 15 minutes.

December 1 - World AIDS Day, Candlelight Memorial Vigil - WNCAP blended these two initiatives together from November 23 – December 1, 2009. Asheville and the surrounding areas had the opportunity to view the Quilt in a public and free exhibit, and then come together to remember the lives of those who have died from AIDS, those who are living with HIV/AIDS, the care takers, the orphaned children, and doctors and nurses, and the countless number of friends and families who continue to grieve.

December 2 thru December 20 - "It Happened One Christmas" - Flat Rock Playhouse premiers the brand new holiday musical, It Happened One Christmas, onstage December 2 through December 20, with original music and arrangements by Jeremy Schonfeld, book by Vincent Marini and story by Bruce Bailey, Lisa Bryant, Vincent Marini, Paige Posey and the Flat Rock Playhouse Conservatory. This new show weaves true stories of regular people with much loved and classic Christmas songs into an inspiring evening of music, laughter and tears. Sometimes truth is more miraculous than fiction. Sometimes the impossible becomes possible in a single breath, in the blink of an eye, with the touch of a hand. During Christmas, we celebrate the most astonishing of ancient miracles, but what about today? Presented by the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Hendersonville, Inc. and Miller’s Fine Drycleaning, It Happened One Christmas is onstage for three weeks, December 2 – December 20. December 3 - Asheville Affiliates 10th Anniversay Celebration - It's our "Party Like It's 1999" Event. We're partnering with WNCAP for this event and a portion of the proceeds with go to their organization that evening for helping to put on the event and also in honor of World AIDS Day on December 1st. December 5 - Celebrating Cherokee through Popular Film "The Last of the Mohicans" - The Asheville Art Museum, celebrating its 60th anniversary, examines the role of popular film in exposing regional cultures, values, and traditions. At 2:00 p.m. each day, on Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, 2009, the Museum will screen the cult classic The Last of the Mohicans. Based on James Fenimore Cooper’s 1826 novel, this 1992 epic film starring Daniel Day-Lewis takes place during the French and Indian War. It was partly filmed in Western North Carolina's Chimney Rock Park and many Cherokee residents were extras in the film.
