The Asheville Figure Skating Club has readied its 2001-2002 schedule with private sessions beginning on Sunday, November 4, from 10AM-12N. Cost per session for private ice time is $20 per skater. The club will also offer group, semi-private and private lessons during all weekend public skating sessions (see "Skating Schedule" link above). Those public sessions will require a pass for the session ($5, including skate rental, if necessary) plus $10-$17 per 15-minute lesson. Group and semi-private lessons might be available without appointment, but it is always advisable to make an appointment by calling 253-2880, as the session you want might be full. All private lessons are by appointment only.
Changes to the season's skating schedule were necessary this year due to changes in the Asheville Civic Center's scheduling, created by the addition of the new NBDL team in Asheville. The club is working hard to maintain availability of ice time for figure skaters until a more permanent solution can be found with the construction of a year-round ice facility. Organization is currently underway for finding that "permanent home" for all ice sports enthusiasts.
The Asheville Figure Skating Club, now in its fourth year of operation, is pleased to have Candy Aylor, a highly successful figure skating coach with 32 years of coaching experience at some of the highest levels of USFSA competition, on board to assume the position of Owner and Skating Director of the club.
Currently teaching in the Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte areas, Ms. Aylor has lived in North Carolina for the past nine years. In previous years, she taught figure skating in California, Washington, DC, and Maryland. Ms. Aylor holds Gold certification in Figures, Freestyle, and Moves-in-the-Field, and is a specialist in Freestyle, Moves and Choreography. Current students include several National level competitors.
In conjunction with the figure skating instruction, Ray Morris, who himself has over 35 years of ice hockey experience, will join the club staff to head up a Hockey Learn to Skate program. Currently, Mr. Morris instructs and officiates ice hockey in the Winston-Salem area, and is a certified USA Hockey ice hockey official. He is also a member in good standing of USA Hockey, Inc., National Association of Sports Officials, and the North Carolina Hockey Referees Association. With Asheville's current fascination with the Asheville Smoke hockey team, Mr. Morris will give beginning skaters a prime opportunity to become well grounded with good fundamental ice hockey skills with this program.
Group lessons are an ideal way for beginning skaters to learn the basics of figure skating. Beginning moves include learning forward and backward stroking, stops and beginning jumps and spins. As skaters progress, they often want to move into semi-private or private lessons to accommodate their own learning curve. Group lessons are appropriate for any age skater.
