Summer Outdoor Adventures 2013

Asheville Parks, Recreation and Cultural is offering a variety of outdoor adventure programs for youth and teens this summer.  Registration begins by email on March 4 at 6pm and spaces are limited.  For more information about an activity, contact Christen McNamara at 828-251-4029.  To register, email Christen atoutdoorprograms@ashevillenc.gov.  Fees are listed for Asheville city residents (R) and for non-residents (NR).  Camps meet at the EastAsheville Recreation Center, 906 Tunnel Rd.

 

Eco Explorers Camp – 6-8 year olds – June 11-13

Three-day camp for ages 6-8 with an environmental education focus.  Activities include hiking, climbing at the Montford Wall, stream investigation, and a field trip to Grandfather Mountain.  Camp runs from 9am-5pm daily.  Fee:  $65 R, $70 NR; includes all equipment, instruction and transportation.  Campers must bring lunch and water daily.  Maximum of 20 campers.

 

Adventure Camp – 8-12 year olds – June 17-21 or July 8-12

Monday – Wednesday, 9:00am-5:00pm, overnight camp out Thursday with pick-up at noon on Friday. Choose from two week-long sessions: June 17-21 or July 8-12.  Activities include hiking, swimming, tubing, rafting, and camping.  Campers must bring lunch & water each day.  Fee: $175 R, $180 NR; includes all equipment, instruction, and transportation.  Campers will need to provide their own sleeping bag and pad for camp out.  Maximum of 24 campers per session, which will break into two groups of 12, by age.

 

Teen Canoe Camping Trip– 12-15 year olds—June 25-28

Four-day overnight canoeing camp designed for ages 12-15.  Campers will canoe 25 miles over 4 days on the New River in northern NC. Participants must be able to swim 50 meters and be comfortable in the water.  Campers will help set-up and break-down primitive camps, cook meals, and follow all safety rules.  Fee is $250 R; $255 NR – includes all equipment, meals, instruction and transportation. Campers must bring lunch and water for first day of camp, and provide their own sleeping bag and pad.  Maximum of 10 campers and minimum of 8.

 

Tween Adventure Camp—11-14 year olds—July 16-18

Three-day camp from 9am-5pm for ages 11-14; includes tubing, hiking, canoeing, and whitewater rafting or inflatable kayaking. Fee: $120 R, $125 NR; includes all equipment, instruction, and transportation.  Campers must bring lunch and water daily. Maximum of 20 campers.

 

Big Adventure Camp —12-14 year olds—July 22-25

Monday – Tuesday, 9:00am-5:00pm, overnight camp out Wednesday with pick-up at 5pm on Thursday. Spend four days adventuring in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee, enjoying beautiful rivers and mountains.  Activities include tubing at Deep Creek, canoeing theFrench Broad, rafting on Nantahala (class III) and Ocoee (class IV) rivers.  Participants must be able to swim 50 meters and be comfortable in the water.  Campers must bring lunch & water each day.  Fee: $215 R, $220 NR; includes all equipment, instruction, and transportation.  Campers will need to provide their own sleeping bag and pad for camp out.
