Asheville Artists’ Exhibition on Display in Crawford Art Gallery

Asheville School’s art department will host a public reception from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29.

Rachel Clegg
– Seaside Statement:
The subject for this series was inspired by my travels to various seaside and island locations. My use of small panels at a medium support grew from the idea of taking ‘snap shots’ or an ‘Instagram,’ which many modern day travelers use to capture a feeling or memory or imagery that evokes a sense of place. I wanted to try and capture this same feeling with small paintings. I was motivated by the challenge of painting (almost) everyday and the opportunity to travel back to the seaside, at least in my mind and attempt to capture that sense of being there.

Moni Hill
– Poolside Statement:
The modern world seems intent on robbing us of precious time and peace. My paintings are reminders to look for the small, simple pleasures in life – to unplug and slow down.

My paintings are from two different shows.
1. Lap Swimming was based on my time spent in and around pools. I explored the lines and shapes created by light shining through water as well as some of the shapes and patterns from the competitive swimming world.

2. Sowing Clover was inspired by Wendell Berry’s poem, “February 2, 1968.”
In the darkness of the moon, in flying snow, in the dead of winter, war spreading, families dying, the world in danger, I walk the rocky hillside, sowing clover.
