The Cheese Store of Asheville and the Asheville School of Wine are partnering up for a fundraising event to benefit the WNC Cheese Trail.

Thanks to Metro Wines, the partners are hosting a showing of “The Cheese Nun” in Asheville on Friday, February 27th at 6:00 PM at Metro Wines. Tickets to the fundraiser are $20 and include the movie, wine, cheese and popcorn. There will also be a raffle to win 2 tickets to the Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest and a meet and greet with a local cheese maker. Space is limited to 45 attendees so advanced tickets are encouraged. “The Cheese Nun” is a documentary chronicling the journey of Sister Noella Marcellino throughout the most remote cheese making regions of France. Sister Noella is regarded as one of the leading international experts on the art of natural milk cheese making.

Attendees will have a chance to meet a local cheese maker to learn more about cheese making in Western North Carolina and learn more about the Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest.

The WNC Cheese Trail was formed in 2012 by a small group of independent artisan cheese makers with the intent of promoting the production and sale of WNC artisan cheeses, facilitating consumer education and encouraging tourism to the region. The primary tool of the organization is the WNC Cheese Trail map that was designed and printed in 2013. The purpose of the map is to encourage locals and tourists to seek out member cheese makers to buy handmade, traditionally crafted cheeses direct from the producer. It is also intended as a tool for restaurants, retailers and distributors to find local cheesemakers.

We’re also raising funds for the Trail with the first annual Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest on April 26th at Highland Brewery. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mountaincheesefest.com. The festival will highlight WNC Cheese Trail cheese makers and members with numerous opportunities for festival goers to learn more about, taste and purchase local, artisan cheeses. The family-friendly festival will also include a wide variety of producers from the industry such as bread and crackers, meats, pickles and jams. Festival attendees can sample and purchase cheeses, speak with cheese makers, have an up close view of dairy animals and attend workshops and panel discussions on topics such as cheese making, cheese tasting and cooking demonstrations using local cheeses.

The WNC Cheese Trail will be organizing additional fundraising activities leading up to the Festival as well as sponsorship drives for WNC businesses to take part in the festival. Learn more about events and activities through the WNC Cheese Trail’s Facebook and Twitter pages and the Festival website.
