UNC Asheville Celebrates Sustainability with Spring Greenfest

UNC Asheville will celebrate its biannual Greenfest with spring activities and programs focused on environmental sustainability.

This year’s celebration will feature a variety of events open to the public, on- and off-campus service projects, and special events for the UNC Asheville community.

The following events at UNC Asheville are free and open to the public:

March 20
Taste of the Earth
Noon-2 p.m. UNC Asheville Quad
Local food-related vendors will provide food samples and information about their environmental and sustainability practices.

March 24
Land Use and Urban Agriculture Forum
12:15-1p.m. Rhoades-Robinson Hall, room 125
Members of the Asheville community will discuss their work in urban agriculture, land use, ornamental landscaping, local food and food justice.

Coal Ash Documentary Screening and Discussion
6-8 p.m. Highsmith Mountain Suites
Emma Greenbaum of the Asheville Beyond Coal Coalition will screen Coal Ash Stories, four short documentary films on the toxic impact of coal ash on communities. Greenbaum will lead a discussion following the screening.

March 25
Energy Stroll
4-5 p.m. Rhoades Hall, TD Bank Atrium
Take a guided tour of the renewable energy and energy efficiency projects on UNC Asheville’s campus, including the Overlook Hall solar array and Rhodes-Robinson Hall geothermal heat pumps.

Renewable Energy Panel
7-9 p.m. Highsmith University Union, Grotto
Renewable energy industry experts and organizers will discuss technology, current renewable energy issues, and opportunities for growth.

March 31
Developing, Implementing, & Sustaining a Food Assistance Incentive Program for Farmers’ Markets: Lessons Learned in South Carolina
7 – 8:30 p.m. Sherrill Center, Mission Health System Mountain View Room

Darcy Freedman will describe the development, implementation and sustainability of a farmers’ market-based food assistance incentive program developed in South Carolina. Freedman is associate professor at Case Western Reserve University and core faculty of the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods.
