Grand Bohemian Gallery Features New Exhibition From Vibrant Expressionist

The Grand Bohemian Gallery in Biltmore Village hosts Quebec expressionist Stefan Horik, kicking off the exhibition “Impressions: The Great Smoky Mountains,” with a two-day opportunity to meet the artist during the exhibition reception.

The receptions are on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The exhibit runs through May 31st.

Horik will debut some 20 new pieces, inspired by the Smoky Mountains and his many trips to Asheville and the surrounding area.

“This is the fifth year Stefan will be appearing with a series of new works,” says Constance Richards, director of the gallery. “This particular series showcases his appreciation of the mountains in this area. Although the artist travels throughout his native Canada, capturing the Rockies and other landscapes in his very vibrant impasto style, he’s retained a soft spot for this area. Typically he brings his family for the annual exhibitions and they rent a cabin to enjoy the hiking, canoeing and mountain biking here. It’s easy to see how the new series was inspired by his annual trek to our mountains.”

Horik was born in 1965 in the province of Quebec, Canada, from a father of Ukrainian origin and a French Canadian mother. During the first seven years of his life, he followed his parents in their travels until the whole family settled down on an old farm in the Charlevoix County some 70 miles east of Quebec City. His father, Vladimir Horik is also an acclaimed landscape master.

Stefan Horik likes well-defined contrasts and significant variations in color value. He also paintings on canvases that are increasingly narrow – catching an interesting snippet of a sunset over water, or a cross-cut of tree trunks and river reflections. Horik’s work is represented by galleries throughout Canada in Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, but is shown in the United States exclusively at the Grand Bohemian Galleries.

Horik’s canvases are fresh, modern, bold and rhythmical.
