Fourth Annual National Physical Education Institute at UNC Asheville Emphasizes Role of New Technology

New technology is shaping the way physical education is taught, and educators from across the world will convene to learn how they will take part in this digital revolution at the fourth annual National Physical Education Institute.

The event will be hosted by the North Carolina Center for Health and Wellness at UNC Asheville, July 27-29.

Wearable technology, activity-based mobile apps and social media are pushing the boundaries of physical education. The 2015 National PE Institute aims to highlight the best practices using these instructional tools, provide research-based information and guidance on developing a K-12 PE curriculum aligned with student assessment through technology.

“We are excited to have the world’s foremost physical education experts with us to share what they have learned from using technology to motivate, track, and monitor student health status,” stated Artie Kamiya, Great Activities Publishing Company president and founder, and co-host of the National PE Institute. “These positive and beneficial instructional strategies will have tremendous implications for every physical education teacher attending this year.”

This year’s keynote speakers include physical educators who are at the cutting edge of their profession and inspire the online #PhysEd community. Each keynote will be streamed live on NCCHW’s website (ncchw.unca.edu) with ongoing conversations through Twitter using the hashtag #PEinstitute15.

This year’s PE Institute, the largest in its history, will include speakers from Australia, China, Singapore, Canada and England, bringing a global perspective.

“We are honored to again host this event and welcome the physical educators attending from around the world,” said NCCHW Executive Director Stacey Millett. “We know how critical physical education is to students during their school day, and our hope is that this interest will carry on after school and beyond school. Having teachers that are well versed in 21st century PE curricula is critical in this movement and is important in our work at NCCHW.”

NCCHW has awarded fellowships to represent the NCCHW at the National PE Institute to eight physical education teachers from North Carolina K-12 schools. . NCCHW Fellows will come away with training to incorporate social media and technology into their schools’ physical education programs.
