“We are excited to meet our next class of UNC Asheville students,” says Shannon Earle, senior director of admissions and financial aid. “Our admissions counselors are on the road to recruitment events and high schools, and we are ready to read your applications. Our holistic approach means that each detail counts, and it’s your opportunity to show us your achievements, your scholarship, and your determination and grit.”

UNC Asheville’s holistic approach to admissions, recalibrated in 2015 with less weight on any single number or test score, takes a personal approach to reviewing academic performance by multiple measures. Each application is read in full by an admissions counselor.

For fall 2015 UNC Asheville received more than 3,300 completed applications for admissions, resulting in the largest first-year class of students to date with some 750 first-year students coming to campus at the start of the semester.

“This recalibration of our criteria makes admissions much more of an art than a science. It’s not just a series of metrics,” says UNC Asheville Provost Joe Urgo. “Finding the talent in our students means we have to go beyond the numbers. We recognize different ways that intelligence is manifest and in doing so we are opening the doors to more students and a more diverse class of students.”
