Bulldogs Visit the Land of the Seawolves

While we may associate Alaska with huskies, the Great Alaska Shootout tournament is actually hosted by the Seawolves of the University of Alaska Anchorage.

And Anchorage is where you will find UNC Asheville’s men’s basketball team during Thanksgiving break, as they face the Seawolves and other foes as part of the prestigious, nationally televised holiday tournament.

“Warming up” for the Great Alaska Shootout has involved plenty of outdoor sightseeing, including a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center about an hour from Anchorage. To keep up with the Bulldogs’ arctic adventure, visit the Facebook page.

UNC Asheville will tip off against Drexel in the tournament’s opening game at midnight EST on Thanksgiving Day and the Bulldogs also have games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27-28. The opening games and winners’ bracket games of the Great Alaska Shootout will be carried live on CBS Sports Network. For game times and details, visituncabulldogs.com.

The Bulldogs head into the tournament on the heels of a road loss to Texas A&M, ranked No. 25 nationally in the AP poll. UNC Asheville is getting big contributions from Dwayne Sutton, the only player on either team with a double-double in the Texas A&M game. Sutton was named Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week.

For games closer to home, check out the Bulldog women’s basketball team which hosts USC Upstate at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27. For this game, there will be free child admission with a paying adult. The Bulldogs are looking for continued great play from junior guard Tianna Knuckles, who was named College Sports Madness Big South Player of the Week after hitting nine three-pointers in two games while grabbing 11 rebounds, making three blocks and three steals.
