Do You Know What a Yellow Ribbon on a Leash Means?

Do you know what a yellow ribbon on a dog’s leash means? A yellow ribbon is a way for you and your children to identify that you need to proceed with caution.

The dog may not be child friendly, may have anxiety issues, or may be overly excited. Either way, caution should be applied when approaching.

Buncombe County and the Asheville Humane Society are partnering together for Project Yellow, to raise awareness and education about dogs that need a little extra space. A yellow ribbon doesn’t necessarily mean the dog is aggressive or unfriendly. It could mean the dog is new with their handler, under medical care, or in foster care for assistance.

Children can be adventurous with running up to animals, but not all dogs understand this and can become fearful. With proper education, all parties involved can be safe and respectful of pets and their owners.
