The Rebirth of the Dinner Show

Under the art-deco façade of Isis Restaurant and Music Hall in Asheville, NC, the nostalgia of the dinner show is reemerging with a soulful southern twist.

“A dinner show is so intimate and the audience can really relate to the players, the music, the lyrics and really listen to the story the artist is telling,” said Lillianna Woody, of the family-owned restaurant and music venue.

The first formal dinner show in the United States began just up the mountain at the Barksdale Theater in Richmond, Va., circa 1953.  Over the next 30 years, the dinner show sparked popularity across the nation. However, by the 1980’s the increase in technology, coupled with the commercialization of the industry, many larger venues replaced these intimate performances and the dinner show faded to black.

“Music, in general, had gotten so big – sometimes you were a mile up trying to enjoy the show,” said Woody.

Over the last decade, a new era has come into play. From a focus on farm-to-table cuisine to urban homesteading, many folks are trading in big business for natural nostalgia.

A movement that goes beyond the table and on to the stage.

“The nostalgia of a dinner show is really coming back,” said Woody. “There are so many layers of quality musicians that really want to showcase their abilities and appreciate having the audience nearby like how it was in the 1950’s. In this atmosphere you can relate to it and connect with the musician.”

A few times a month, lucky ticket holders flock to Isis as the rebirth of the legendary dinner show emerges – pairing their award-winning seasonal-inspired menu with the talents of local, regional and nationally-acclaimed musicians.

From Appalachian bluegrass, traditional Celtic, rock, jazz and even a cabaret from time to time, the shows, coupled with the menu of eclectic southern style have caught the eye of locals and visitors alike seeking a unique and authentic Appalachian experience.
