Art Nouveaux Group Holds Third Annual Purchase Party

The group was delighted to purchase a portrait by photographer Tim Barnwell, Rowena Bradley Making Double Weave Rivercane Baskets, black and white silver gelatin print, 1991. Barnwell hosted the group at his Asheville studio for a fascinating evening in the fall. The Museum will be showcasing Barnwell’s work in the upcoming exhibition Hands in Harmony: Traditional Crafts and Music in Appalachia, Photographs by Tim Barnwell, May 14 – October 10, 2010, featuring works from Barnwell’s latest book of the same name. The Museum also has a double weave basket by Rowena Bradley in its collection, and is pleased to make connections between the artists and the artworks.

The Art Nouveaux will also be adding a multi-media work by Lesley Dill to the collection, I See Visions, lithograph on muslin and silk organza with hand-sewing, 2004. While the Museum has exhibited work by Dill in two past exhibitions, this is the first work by this significant contemporary artist to be in the Museum’s collection.

The third work selected by the group is by the contemporary Cherokee wood carver, Virgil Crowe, Rattlesnake Mask, butternut wood, 2009. Crowe is one of the artists included in the Museum’s exhibition Cherokee Carvers: Tradition Renewed. On view at the Museum in the fall, this exhibition, including this work, will be traveling to several additional sites over the coming year. This work is a wonderful complement to the traditional Cherokee basket by artist Lucille Lossiah that the Art Nouveaux purchased for the Museum in 2008.

The Art Nouveaux are dedicated to increasing their own knowledge about art and collecting, while also growing the Museum’s permanent collection through annual purchases. Modeled after the Museum’s successful Collectors’ Circle, the group is for art enthusiasts new to collecting and wanting to learn more.

The Museum thanks the Art Nouveaux for their continued commitment and dedication. The group is looking to grow in 2010 and invites all art lovers, collectors and artists to learn more about the group.
