Two Buncombe County schools received $2,000 each from a national awards program that supports schools working to integrate interactive technology into the curricula.A.C. Reynolds Middle and Haw Creek Elementary schools will benefit from the Best Buy Teach Award program. Brenda Luther, Reynolds Middle’s computer technology teacher, submitted her school’s proposal. Pamela Brillisour, the media coordinator at Haw Creek Elementary, submitted her school’s application. At Reynolds Middle, the money will help fund the “Rocket Report,” a student produced news broadcast. A Smart System computer is used to program and schedule the broadcast to all rooms throughout the school. Beginning with a countdown, the program starts with a Power Point slide show, followed by live video camera broadcast of student anchors giving daily school news. This program allows students to be actively engaged in the journalism process. Haw Creek Elementary plans to purchase ten digital cameras with its $2,000. The cameras are used to enrich students’ writing and understanding of curricular objectives with a hands-on experience. “Teachers are finding creative ways to engage students by using technology hands-on; we want to support their efforts by helping them enhance or expand these programs,” said Paula Prahl, Best Buy’s Vice President of Public Affairs. “We know that schools are the cornerstones of these communities where our employees, customers and their families live and work.” (Images provided by Buncombe County Schools.)
