Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority Unveils Way-Finding Signs

The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority has recently put in $1.65 million for a wayfinding project. Asheville city contributed $90,000 to the project to create more signs for parking garages, along with $75,000 for the initial design. The county contributed $25,000, and smaller donations were made by local supporters like Asheville Regional Airport and the towns of Weaverville, Woodfin, Montreat and Black Mountain.

The new directing system will include 240 roadway signs, 26 pedestrian signs, 40 parking deck signs and 13 informational kiosks that will help visitors navigate downtown and direct them to attractions and historic sites around the county. The more than 300 signs and kiosks should be up by early March.

The TDA's Tourism Development Fund draws on the local tax of half a cent levied on hotel, motel and bed-and-breakfast rooms. Since 2001, the tourism fund has financed $12 million in projects, including the sign system and the new Pack Square Park.
