The past few weeks have proved challenging for blood collection due to illness. Many donors have been unable to donate due to flu and flu-like symptoms. In some areas, schools are reposting as much as 20% of the student body absent due to illness. As a result, many blood drives are seeing a high number of donors ill and unable to keep their donation appointments.
The Red Cross is asking blood donors to donate immediately to prevent supply levels from dropping even further in the coming days and weeks. It is important to note that coming off of a major holiday period, the need for blood never takes a holiday, says Patrick Fitzsimmons, Executive Director of the Asheville-Mountain Area Red Cross.
