Do You Have a Winter Car Safety Kit?

Winter is here, make sure you are prepared by putting together a car safety kit. Every motorist should have a kit in his or her car (and parents - make sure that your teen has one, too). Being prepared could potentially save your life!

There is no excuse - most of the supplies can be obtained from around the house without spending a dime. Here is what your kit should contain:

- A blanket for each family member
- Matches or lighters
- Towels
- Nonperishable foods, such as granola bars. Canned fruit and nuts are great as long as you keep the hand-cranked can opener with them.
- Bottled water
- Extra socks and gloves
- Rain gear
- Appropriate shoes – maybe some collapsible rubber galoshes
- A flashlight with extra batteries – you may get caught on a dark road and need to change a tire or put on chains at night
- If you're reliant upon medication to live, such as insulin, make sure you have at least three days' supply with you. Every winter many people become stranded overnight in the snow, so be prepared by keeping extra medication in your winter kit.
- A small sack of sand or kitty litter – it will help keep your car heavier and adhered to the road or it can provide traction when spilled on slick surfaces
- A folding camping shovel – it doesn't take up much space, but you'll be glad to have it if stuck in mud or snow
- Jumper cables should be carried all year long

It may sound like a lot of extra work, and cost some extra money, but if you get stuck on the side of the road, you will be grateful that you took the time to be prepared.
