The City of Asheville Applies for Justice Assistance Grant

The City of Asheville is applying for a 2010 Local Solicitation Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), which is provided through a partnership between federal, state and local governments to create safer communities.

The grant awards funds to local governments for equipment, training, technical assistance, information systems and supplies to enhance local law enforcement.

The Asheville Police Department and the Buncombe County Sheriffs Office are jointly applying for about $90,000.

Asheville plans to use grant money, if awarded, to improve equipment on in-car video systems. This would aid evidence collection in traffic related incidents, enhance officer and public safety, and advance the Asheville City Councils Goal of creating a Safer City. In addition, these funds would reduce the strain on the citys fiscal budget.

The Buncombe County Sheriffs Office plans to use its portion of the grant for the purchase of a small portable robot that can navigate tight spaces and allow personnel to monitor dangerous areas from a safe distance.

Citizens can submit input on the grant by contacting Captain Wade Wood in the Asheville Police Departments Administrative Division at (828) 259-5885 or at [email protected].
