Book Artists Laurie Corral and Frank Brannon Offer Gallery Talk at UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery

The history and techniques of book art will be the subject of a gallery talk and reception at Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library, from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28. The event will highlight the closing day of the Blowers Gallery exhibit, “Art of the Book: Process, Product and Community at Asheville BookWorks.”

Laurie Corral and Frank Brannon, who are instructors at BookWorks, will use works from the exhibition as they describe their techniques and approaches, and those of other BookWorks artists.

Corral’s book art includes letterpress printmaking, bookbinding and papermaking. She is director of BookWorks and former education director at the Hickory Museum of Art. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from West Virginia University and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Brannon creates limited-edition letterpress books and is proprietor of SpeakEasy Press. His most recent monograph, “Cherokee Phoenix – Advent of a Newspaper,” explored the history of that short-lived north Georgia newspaper. Brannon has been lead letterpress printer for the Penland School of Crafts Winter Residency in Letterpress, and has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Book Arts Program at the University of Alabama.

“Art of the Book: Process, Product and Community at Asheville Bookworks” is on display through Sept. 28. Blowers Gallery is free and open to the public daily with evening viewing hours most days. For gallery hours and more information, call 828/251-6436 or visit http://bullpup.lib.unca.edu/library/exhibits/blowers/exhibits.html.
