History Comes Alive at The Health Adventure

A special program at The Health Adventure will give students an up close and personal experience with one of the most notable figures in science: Alexander Graham Bell.

During the month of March, the museum will offer an interactive theatrical presentation featuring eminent scientist, inventor and innovator, Alexander Graham Bell. Bell’s invention of the telephone was one that forever changed human communication. The program will introduce students to the science behind the telephone through hands-on demonstrations with the “real” Alexander Graham Bell, portrayed by Dr. Charles McKnight, a music professor at UNC-Asheville and a volunteer of The Health Adventure.

In addition to exploring sound and the technology of the telephone, the program will offer insight into what motivated Bell to pursue his work. Known as “the father of the deaf,” Bell’s early work focused on teaching the hearing impaired to communicate through Visible Speech, a writing system developed by Bell’s father, Alexander Melville Bell. Both Bell’s mother and wife were deaf, and his interest in the disability led him to study acoustics and experiment with sound.

“This program is a great complement to our Get the Message exhibit,” said Paige Johnson, President & CEO. “Get the Message explores the science behind communication, so a program centered around the science behind the telephone—one of the most significant inventions in communication—is a perfect fit. The theatrical presentation makes a very technical concept less intimidating for students. Our fun, entertaining approach opens the door for children to explore science in a new way.”

School groups interested in scheduling the program may call The Health Adventure at (828) 254-6373, Ext. 329 to reserve a date. The museum is also offering a special public performance of the program on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m. The program is free with museum admission, but seating is limited and reservations must be made to secure a seat. Those interested in attending may also call (828) 254-6373, Ext. 329 to RSVP.
