Volunteers for the city of Asheville recently assembled bicycle lockers in the hallway linking the Rankin Avenue parking deck to Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. The lockers are part of the ongoing implementation of the city’s comprehensive bicycle plan, which was adopted in 2008.
“During the development of the bicycle plan, one of the facilities that cyclists told us was missing was secure bicycle parking,” said Barb Mee, Transportation Planner for the City of Asheville. “The cycling community has been supportive and very eager to see the lockers. When I put out a call for assembly help, people stepped forward immediately.” Lockers will also be located in each of the city’s public parking garages. Some lockers will be rented by day, and others will be available for monthly rental. The city’s parking services division will manage the bicycle lockers. For rental information, citizens can contact Asheville parking services at 259-5792. Bike lockers are larger than typical lockers and allow cyclists to store their bicycle and equipment in a secure location. Asheville on Bikes, a local organization that cultivates the culture of commuting and urban cycling, has raised money through its activities to add art to the locker exteriors. The art will be installed at a later date. “I am so pleased that Asheville on Bikes has been a partner on this project from the beginning,” Mee continued. “And the art will be an important part of the project. It is working through our public art process, and I hope to see it in place soon.” The city will continue to offer bicycle racks downtown and in the parking garages. There is no charge to use the racks. The City of Asheville operates three parking garages in downtown Asheville. The Civic Center garage is located south of the Civic Center, the Rankin Street garage is located on Rankin Street between College and Walnut Streets, and the Wall Street garage, which is entered from Otis Street between Wall Street and Battery Park Avenue.
