Creating a Personal Mandala at the Asheville Art Museum May 18

Explore an inner landscape by making a personal mandala, a concentric arrangement of geometric shapes representing how one views oneself, at the Asheville Art Museum on Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Mandala is a Sandskrit word meaning center, circumference and magic circle. Creating one can be a way to fuse ancient and contemporary wisdom by combining personal creativity with sacred symbolism to evoke a very visual form of meditation.

No previous art experience is necessary to create a mandala, only a desire to enjoy this artistic experience.

Participants will tour the exhibition Time is of the Essence, Contemporary Landscape Art then take part in a guided work session with artist and art therapist Laura Zeisler, who has more than 15 years experience leading workshops for artists and non-artists alike.

“A mandala is an ancient and universal form of artistic meditation used to encourage insight and creativity. We will learn its history, create our own mandalas and utilize the Museum's exhibition as inspiration for our own inner landscapes,” said Zeisler about the event. “It will definitely be a very fun and interactive workshop.”

This afternoon workshop will be held in the Museum’s WNC Art Resource Center. The cost is $30 for Museum Members and $35 for guests. All materials and Museum admission are included. Pre-registration is required and class space is limited.
