The NC Stage Company Introduces Acting Intensives for Adults and Youth


North Carolina Stage Company is excited to announce their new Acting Intensive classes beginning in September 2010. Designed for actors interested in pursuing an serious study of acting, classes will run on a semester schedule and provide Asheville actors with conservatory-style workshops and professional training. Each course will culminate in a weekend of performances at North Carolina Stage Company.

Acting I

Ages 11 to 17
Saturdays, September 18-December 11
10am to 12:30pm
$275 for 12 weeks
Limit of 10 actors
Instructor: Michael MacCauley

This class will focus on the basics of acting: personal investment, listening, telling the story, investigation of physical and emotional life, actions and objectives. Exercises will include breathing, relaxation, grounding, physical stretching, and voice work, along with acting exercises that explore emotional availability and connection to the text. The goal is to make the actor keenly aware of their physical instrument, and emotionally available to explore the nuances of character development in any given role. In this class, students will study various methods and techniques of voice, movement, and acting. This class will act as a bridge to advanced actor training on the college and graduate school levels. Students will expand their horizons, through intensive, individual actor training, giving them a greater advantage as artists in the world of professional theatre.

Creating a Character

Ages 18 and over
Mondays, September 20-December 6
6:30 to 9:00pm
$275 for 12 weeks
Limit of 10 actors
Instructor: Michael MacCauley

In this class actors will focus on a two-person scene with a partner. In a thorough and specific investigation of characters in a contemporary play, actors will explore beats, actions, objectives, and the nuances of listening specifically and reacting. Moment to moment acting and character development will be the primary focus of this 12-week intensive.

Cost and Registration

Each course runs for 12 weeks and costs $275. Enrollment is by audition only. Auditions will be held at North Carolina Stage Company on Saturday, August 28. Each auditioning student will be asked to prepare a contemporary monologue and provided sides. Please call 828-239-0263 to make an audition appointment or for more information.

About the Instructor

Michael MacCauley has been a professional actor, director, writer, and producer for the past 18 years. He has appeared in many NCSC productions including The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and Macbeth. His other acting credits include several off-Broadway productions, a national tour with John Houseman’s The Acting Company, eight world premieres, guest artist at various regional theatres including Florida Stage, Studio Arena, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Indiana Repertory Theatre and others. He has also directed and produced both professionally and at the college level. Michael performed his one-man show, Sure of This One, to critical acclaim off-Broadway. He is co-founder and former Artistic Director of River Union Stage in Frenchtown, NJ. Michael ran Lark Theatre’s Shakespeare studio in New York for two years, working with young professional actors. In addition to acting in North Carolina Stage Company productions, he has been an NCSC teaching artist in schools since 2006.
