"Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of Abandoned Trousers" at NC Stage Through April 20

"Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers", by Glen Berger, plays through April 20 at North Carolina Stage Company in downtown Asheville. A quirky and suspenseful comedy, "Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers" is the story of a sheltered librarian whose life is forever changed when he discovers an overdue book 134 years overdue, that is. "Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers" runs through April 20, and is directed by Casey Sams, and stars Terry Weber.

Our protagonist is The Librarian, whose life centers on the order and calm of his library. The mysteriously overdue book and an unclaimed dry-cleaning ticket for a pair of trousers spur him on to break the daily habits of his life and solve a mystery that spans continents and centuries. Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers (lintel: that's the doorway, not the legume) is the story of one man's stubborn search for an answer, and what happens when the answers are all questions.

The New York Times calls Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers "gripping a Da Vinci Code maze of clues and speculations." In its review of the original New York production, NYTheatre.com wrote, " 'Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers' is also an extraordinary journey--via a one-man show disguised as a lecture--toward spiritual renewal. Would you know a miracle if you saw one? asks the play's narrator and central character. Sometimes just waking up to the wonders and mysteries of life is all the miracle we need."

Like NC Stage?s hit production of Chesapeake in 2007, "Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers" is a one-man play that breaks the "fourth wall", speaking directly to the audience. Where Chesapeake depended on the sophisticated projections of G. Craig Hobbs, "Underneath the Lintel: The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers" includes a huge number of props that The Librarian presents as "evidences" in his quest to solve the mystery.
