April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Show Support Through These Events


In the pursuit of a community that is free of sexual violence, Our VOICE serves all individuals in Buncombe County affected by sexual assault and abuse, through counseling, advocacy and education. Founded in 1974, Our VOICE has provided direct services and educational programs in Buncombe County for over 35 years. This year�s theme, �Everybody�s Safety = Every Body�s Freedom� seeks to promote active consent and increase community accountability for sexual violence.

This year, you can show your support by participating in these events.

Read for a Change: Free Books to End Sexual Violence April 1-30

Our VOICE will be distributing free books on the topic of sexual violence and its prevention throughout the month of April. Look for them in public gathering spots around Buncombe County. Read a book and pass it on!

10th Annual Survivors� Art Show and Auction April 2 7-10pm

The 10th Annual Survivor�s Art Show features artwork created by survivors of sexual violence and honors the healing power of art. Actress and advocate Andie MacDowell is the event�s honorary chair; the featured artist is Jonas Gerard. Silent auction, edibles and music.

Got Consent? Lunch and Learn at MAHEC April 6 12-1:30pm

Sexual violence affects women and men, boys and girls and people of all races, backgrounds and sexual identities. Join Our VOICE Prevention Educators in a conversation on the topic. We�ll discuss cultural origins of sexual violence, best practices for responding to disclosures of sexual abuse, local resources and innovative prevention efforts. Bring your lunch and drop in for this free event.

Film Night At Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company April 8 10pm

Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity examines the relationship between pop culture's construction of masculinity and the reality of being a man in late 20th century American society. Using pop culture examples, Katz makes his case for pop-cultural change and a broader definition of contemporary masculinity.

Killing Us Softly 3: Advertising�s Image of Women, the award-winning documentary by Jean Kilbourne, discusses the psychological effects of the portrayal of women in advertising media. She arms viewers with tools for communication and suggestions for opening an empowering dialogue.

Bar Outreach Project April 9 & 24

Our VOICE advocates will visit Asheville bars to raise awareness of drug-facilitated sexual assault. The goal of this project is to foster safer spaces and increase personal and community accountability.

Asheville High School Sexual Assault Awareness Days April 12-13

As part of a new model to raise awareness at area high schools, Our VOICE Prevention Educators will conduct workshops on Dating & Communication in every ninth grade classroom at Asheville High School. Our VOICE will also offer information and pamphlets to all students at lunch.

A Voice of Recovery Workshop with Jennifer Storm April 16 9am�4:45pm

As a child and teen survivor of sexual assault and a woman in recovery from addiction, Ms. Storm can speak firsthand about the biological and emotional responses of trauma, understanding sexual identity, the affects of substance abuse and recovery, and victim�s rights. Participants will also gain insight into how U.S. culture impacts sexual identity and the pressure to engage in high-risk behaviors. www.mahec.net/Calendar

Tough Guys and Good Girls: Workshop on Gender Stereotypes for Youth Workers April 29 5�6:15pm

Our VOICE Prevention Educators will lead an interactive workshop designed to take a critical look at gender stereotypes, the effects they have on adolescents and best practices for working with teens on the subject.

Workshop is free. $20 fee includes ticket to Straightlaced and a boxed dinner. Registration required at www.DiversityEd.org. YMI Cultural Center, 39 S. Market Street.

Straightlaced film with Director�s Remarks from Debra Chasnoff. April 29 7:00pm

With a fearless look at a highly charged subject, Straightlaced unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining American teens. Their stories reflect a diversity of experiences, demonstrating how gender role expectations and homophobia are interwoven, and illustrating the different ways that these expectations connect with culture, race and class. Sponsored by the Safe Schools for All Coalition.

Let�s Talk: Consent and Sexual Violence Workshop for Parents of Teens May 4 6-7:30pm

1 in 6 girls and 1 in 10 boys will experience sexual abuse by the age of 18. This workshop helps parents and guardians start conversations with teens about sexual boundaries and abuse. Co-facilitated by Our VOICE and Planned Parenthood educators.
