Three WNC Habitat for Humanity affiliates are marking National Women Build Week, May 4-10, with events spotlighting the compassion, dedication, talents and abilities of women.
Asheville Area Habitat will celebrate the week, which is sponsored by Lowe’s, on Saturday, May 10 at noon when the Women Build Leadership Committee will “hand up” a ceremonial key to the Yarosh partner family at the affiliate’s Enka Hills Subdivision. This will be the last day Leadership Committee members will be working together on the jobsite, completing work on the affiliate’s third Women Build House. Work on the house began on Valentine’s Day, and is being completed, as promised, by Mother’s Day. In addition to the Leadership Committee and their female construction supervisors, Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy, Habitat representatives and house sponsors will participate in the key passing ceremony. The 18-year-old Haywood Habitat affiliate in Waynesville will begin work on its first-ever Women Build Habitat house on Wednesday, May 7. Twenty-five women will be framing a house for the Quintaro family in Barefoot Ridge in Clyde; response to the announcement of the Women Build opportunity was so great that the affiliate has since added four Women Build days and is seeking additional volunteers. For more information, contact Executive Director Marnette Colborne at 828-246-3498 or marnette@haywoodhabitat.org. The Henderson County Habitat affiliate will celebrate National Women Build Week on Wednesday, May 7 when 25-30 volunteers will be working on a 4-bedroom 2-bath house for the Espinoza family. At noon, media are invited to attend the affiliate’s first Women Build event, which will take place in Shuey Knolls in Edneyville. Eighty Habitat houses are planned on the 40-acre development; currently, 30 homes have been built on the site. For more information, contact: Gretchen Batra at 828-692-6229 or gbatra@mchsi.com The Women Build program encourages and empowers women to take action and to build Habitat houses, addressing the problem of substandard housing in a concrete way, so families have safe, decent and affordable homes. Lowe’s is a national partner with Habitat for Humanity International and is the underwriter for the Women Build program. To date, Lowe’s has provided more than $18 million in support of Habitat programs nationwide and more than 1,200 homes have been built by women crews nationwide. As participants in this nationwide awareness event, Asheville Area Habitat, Haywood Habitat and Henderson County Habitat will each receive a $5,000 gift card from Lowe's. For the past 24 years, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has been building simple, decent houses for qualified families currently living in inadequate housing; homes are sold at no profit to partner families, who pay back a no-interest loan.
