Local writers will have the opportunity to hone their skills with UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program's summer workshop series. The program will offer four workshops in poetry and prose. Classes are open to all interested writers but class size is limited; early registration is suggested.
Noted author and UNC Asheville literature and language lecturer Cynn Chadwick will teach "Only Trouble is Interesting in Fiction: A Fiction Workshop for Beginning-Intermediate Writers" at the Asheville School, 360 Asheville School Rd., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, June 2-30. The workshop will focus on craft terminology and execution of technique as students write and workshop their short stories. Marjorie Klein, a noted writer, was recognized in Barnes and Noble's 2000 "Discover Great New Writers" selection. She will teach "Everybody's Got a Story: Writing the Personal Essay" at the YMI Cultural Center, 39 S. Market St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 5-19. Students will read the work of published writers, participate in free-writing exercises and refine drafts of their personal essays through workshop critiques and revision. Dale Neal, fiction writer and veteran Asheville Citizen-Times journalist, will lead "The Mechanics of Story: A Prose Workshop" at the Asheville School from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, June 5-26. Students will study classic stories and work on developing their craft, ultimately developing their own stories through workshops. Local poet Mark Prudowsky will teach "Torque and Tone in Poetry" at the Phil Mechanics Studios, 109 Roberts St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, June 2-30. The class, aimed at poets who are interested in expanding their craft by learning how to vary tone in their work, will examine various poetic elements. Each course qualifies for one UNC Asheville credit hour in literature and language. Tuition and fees are $84.34 for in-state students and $455.62 for out-of-state students. A $20 non-refundable application fee for new students will also be charged.
