Warren Wilson Hosts Performance Artists Gillum, Crutchfield March 28 - 29

Warren Wilson Theatre will present local performance artists Julie Becton Gillum and John Crutchfield in "Hour Earth (after the dark): an evening of performance" on March 28-29 at Kittredge Theatre, on the Warren Wilson College campus. Curtain times will be 8 p.m. March 28 and 9 p.m. March 29. Call 828-771-3040 for reservations.

Gillum and Crutchfield, both part-time faculty members at Warren Wilson, have been active in the performing arts in Asheville for many years. This show represents their first collaborative project and includes four solo performances plus one duet created with New York director and Warren Wilson faculty member Ron Bashford. The later curtain time on March 29 is intended to allow the artists, the theatre, and the audience to observe Earth Hour from 8-9 p.m., when the theatre will remain dark. Patrons are welcome to come early to sit in the darkened theatre before the show at 9. Gillum's first piece, "Pledge", a collaboration between Gillum and composer Wayne Kirby, explores the Pledge of Allegiance through movement and sound. The piece examines underlying themes presented in this vow honoring our "alien nation." Butoh performer Gillum's other piece, "Butap . . . for my son John", is based on her relationship with her son. It explores both light and darkness found in maternal love. Music for the piece is by Elvis Presley and Paul Rucker. John Crutchfield's solo performance work combines dynamic, stylized movement with poetic texts and, occasionally, live music. "Caliban's Dream" is a deconstructive psychomachia using text from William Shakespeare's "The Tempest." His "Black Snow Flying Upwards, or: My Embarrassment" is a jittery vaudeville solo about a monotonous crucifixion. It's also about love, death, hunger, memory, nausea, the mind and the fragment of a leaf in someone's hair.

In addition to the solo pieces, the two artists will present a new and as yet untitled collaborative work combining dance and acting.
