Flat Rock Playhouse Presents “The 1940’s Radio Hour” Through Oct 24

Journey back to December 21, 1942, for a live radio broadcast of The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade at the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin Room. Filled with big band hits from the greatest generation and a zany cast of radio stars, “The 1940’s Radio Hour” is one of the most popular musicals in history.

As the play begins, the audience sees the employees of Radio Station WOV and the Cavalcade cast entering the studio for the evening’s broadcast. The audience serves as the “studio audience,” and gets to sneak a peak at the “on air” and “behind the scenes” relationships and mishaps of the broadcast. The characters are nostalgic icons of the era – Ginger, a bubble-headed waitress by day plays the sexy vamp on the airwaves; Johnny Cantone, a crooner whose rat-pack style keeps the ladies on edge, including Ann Collier, the office secretary turned chanteuse, and Clifton A. Feddington, band leader and overly stressed general manager of the station.

The story line does follow the characters’ relationships, but focuses more on the broadcast of the radio show. The orchestra is live in the studio, and with the assistance of the put-upon stage manager and the misfit studio technician, the talent presents an authentic 1940’s radio show. The show features hits of the era, including “Our Love is Here to Stay,” “You Go to My Head,” “I’ll Never Smile Again,” “Blue Moon,” and “That Old Black Magic,” as well as period promotional spots for the sponsors.

”The 1940’s Radio Hour” is directed by Playhouse Artistic Director, Robin R. Farquhar, and the cast includes longtime Playhouse favorites Kim Cozort, Steve Carlisle, and Scott Treadway. Also in the cast are Peter Thomasson, Stephanie Wahl, Sharon Stokes, Damian Duke Domingue, Justin Patterson, and several new faces to the Playhouse stage.

Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation is the executive producer for “The 1940’s Radio Hour.”

Flat Rock Playhouse is located on Highway 25, 3 miles south of Hendersonville. From I-26, take exit 53 (old exit #22) and follow the signs.
