Isis Music Hall Hosts Benefit Show for Immigrants and Refugees

Isis Music Hall in West Asheville will host Liberty Circus on Sunday, Aug. 13th for a benefit show for organizations working with immigrants and refugees.

All proceeds from the Liberty Circus show will benefit American Civil Benefits Union (ACLU).

The core group of Liberty Circus includes singer/songwriter Malcolm Holcombe, American novelist and poet Alan Kaufman, award-winning poet and author Al Maginnes, and poet, songwriter and band leader, RB Morris.

Each performer is a visionary in their own right – but together, they are known as Liberty Circus – the rogue band of outlaw songwriters and poets who crisscross the land performing celebrations of good old democratic open-heartedness.

“(The tour) was conceived to raise money for organizations that are working with refugees an/or civil rights,” Maginnes said. “Individually we don’t have much money, but collectively we can make a small impact.”

Their Southeast tour includes stops in Raleigh, Atlanta and Lexington, KY before closing out the set at Isis Music Hall.

All profits from the proceeds of their shows will directly benefit organizations working with immigrants and refugees.

“I’ve always felt that my writing has been separate from my political activism, but I’m glad to be able to combine the two,” Maginnes said. “This administration seems bent on denying the humanity of anyone who doesn’t fit in a certain mold or a certain kind of person. They are saying to this population who in most cases have gone through horrible things that they are just not welcome here and I have a big problem with that.”

Maginnes said that along the way, local performers will be invited to the stages to grow Liberty Circus into a big national family of love and support for Lady Liberty’s tired, poor masses yearning to breathe free.
