Asheville Art Museum Presents Exhibition Held in Conjunction With Summer of Glass

The Asheville Art Museum is excited to present Red Hot in the Blue Ridge, an exhibition being held in conjunction with Western North Carolina’s community-wide Summer of Glass celebration.

On view at the Asheville Art Museum On the Slope at 175 Biltmore Avenue now through September 30th, Red Hot in the Blue Ridge celebrates Western North Carolina’s unique place in the history of American Studio Glass. Many other organizations and galleries across WNC are also hosting glass-focused events, programs and exhibitions during the region’s Summer of Glass celebration, which coincides with a new exhibition at Biltmore of multi-media artist Dale Chihuly’s monumental glass sculptures.

Glass as an art form emerged in Western North Carolina when several key artists, such as Harvey Littleton and Mark Peiser, broke away from the traditional, industrial standards of glassmaking and instead established independent studios in the late 1960s to create work and train students with a focus on experimentation. The Asheville Art Museum has built its glass collection thanks to gifts from generous local, regional, and national collectors and by seeking out innovative work from the next generation of creators. Red Hot in the Blue Ridge reflects both the impulse to collect glass as well as transformational contributions to the medium made here in Western North Carolina.
