Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

Such an exciting time at area tailgate farmers markets — some of the most iconic summer produce arrived at markets this past week! From fruits to vegetables, the season is picking up despite the rains that hit last month.

Peaches, the fuzzy heart of the summer season, arrived from McConnell Farms. Raspberries, delicate yet powerfully packed with flavor, made a limited appearance from Bear Necessities Farm this week as well. Find both farms at Asheville City Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market. Get out the yogurt and ice cream to savor the first of these fruits.

Cauliflower and broccoli are here, but they’ll only be around for a few weeks when they’ll disappear until fall. Find cauliflower from Highgate Farm (Black Mountain Tailgate Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market). And broccoli abounds from Aardvark Farm (River Arts District Farmers Market and Asheville City Market) as well as Tucker’s Garden (West Asheville Tailgate Market).

Zucchini, the vegetable with the most fun name to say, is here to stay. There are a wide variety of them at markets now and they’re all great for grilling, sauteing, or folding into a morning omelet.

Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide.
