Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

The final holiday farmers markets of 2018 are upon us. The last Saturday markets of the year took place this past weekend, and this coming Tuesday and Wednesday are the last weekday markets.

This is your chance to grab any last-minute holiday gifts from local farmers and artisans and to fill your pantries with local food items to get you through until January. To find holiday markets throughout other regions, visit the Farmers Market Closings and Holiday Dates.

There will be a three-week hiatus of markets across the region from December 19 through January 5. Between then, some independent as well as larger grocery chains carry locally grown produce and other items. Look for the Appalachian Grown logo, and you can always ask stores what they source locally and from which farmers.

Winter markets start in January and most throughout the region are indoors. Visit the Winter Farmers Markets for a full list. At these markets expect to find a combination of produce (including root vegetables and leafy greens); meats, eggs, and cheeses; baked goods (including bread and sweet treats), as well as other delightful goods.

Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide at appalachiangrown.org.
