The Asheville Tourists once again gave the Delmarva Shorebirds all they could handle for six innings on Tuesday night. However, for the second straight game the Shorebirds exploded in the seventh inning.
This time by breaking a 0-0 tie and turning it into a 7-0 final score.
Asheville’s starting pitcher, Shelby Lackey, worked out of a first inning jam and never looked back. Lackey threw five shutout innings, struck out seven, and only surrendered two hits. At one point the right-hander retired 12 in a row. Lackey threw 65 pitches and turned the game over to the bullpen in the sixth inning with the game still scoreless.
Delmarva kept Asheville’s offense at bay and ended up shutting out the Tourists. Asheville totaled four hits in the game; three of which came from Daniel Montano. The Tourists had runners aboard in almost every inning but never came up with the big run-scoring hit.
The Shorebirds used a four-run seventh inning to open the game’s scoring and added three more in the eighth. It could have been worse but Nick Kennedy did an excellent job. Kennedy inherited a bases-loaded, no out jam and stranded all three runners.
The Tourists lost game two of a series for the first time this season. Asheville had won the previous five game twos of each series they had played this season up to tonight.
