Local Ceramics Artist Seung Jun Seo Opens New Exhibition

Local ceramics artist Seung Jun Seo (pronounced sung-joon-suh) has announced the opening of his latest exhibition, titled “Natural Disaster,” at Gallery 101, a new downtown art gallery owned and operated by the artist.

Jun is a South Korean-born former art director for corporate brands, stage director for prominent theater and television companies, and installation artist. He has written and directed numerous stage productions and art exhibitions in locations such as Seoul, New York, N.Y., and London, U.K.

As a child, Jun was raised by his grandmother in rural South Korea. The nearest neighbor was more than a half-hour away. Without much exposure to commercial materials, Jun mixed soil with water to create forms of clay. These creations became his best friends.

In the midst of his theater career, Jun was paralyzed from a rare illness and hospitalized for two years. Defying every doctor’s prognosis, he slowly regained full control of his motor skills. Jun retired from the theater, moved to Maui, Hawai‘i, and returned to his first love—clay forms and the natural world.

On advice from friends and fellow artists, Jun moved to Asheville to pursue ceramics and clay art as a full-time artist and gallery owner. “Natural Disaster” is based on the violent dichotomy of the volcano and the earthquake—and attempts to build a bridge of acceptance between the two.

“Natural Disaster” will be on display through October 27, 2019, at Gallery 101 located at 56 S. Lexington Ave., Unit 101, in downtown Asheville. Gallery 101 will be open to the public every Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
