Urban Land Institute to Present Asheville Hotel and Tourism Recommendations on Thursday

Following a community conversation on the impacts of hotels, the Urban Land Institute will be back in Asheville to present recommendations on best land use practices and strategies to better plan for and regulate hotel development.

The meeting will take place from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in the Asheville Banquet Room, 87 Haywood St. The meeting will be open to the public and free to attend.

In September, Asheville City Council approved a temporary moratorium on the approval of new hotels, which means that no hotel development applications will be approved for a year. The purpose of the moratorium is to allow the city time to further study the issues surrounding tourism and assess the impacts of hotel development, both real and perceived.

City staff will utilize ULI’s recommendations as part of their continuing efforts to analyze hotel development and tourism. The public can anticipate staff to be back with their final recommendations regarding appropriate policies, strategies, tools and regulations for tourism and hotel development in the summer of 2020.
