Buncombe Schools to Continue Remote Learning Through Feb. 12th

The Buncombe County Schools Board of Education met for a board briefing on January 14. Among the items on the action agenda, the board voted to modify the BCS Return to Learn Plan.

The board made the decision to continue remote learning for all students through at least Friday, Feb. 12. This is due to the persistent and significant spread of COVID-19 throughout our community.

The board has had frequent communication with the local health department and health experts. It has closely monitored the local percent positivity and North Carolina’s County Alert System, which indicates the critical spread of COVID-19 across Western North Carolina. According to health experts, the county continues to be in the midst of a surge in COVID-19 cases, likely due to holiday travel.

By remaining virtual, the board of education aims to slow the spread of this virus and keep staff and students as safe and healthy as possible.

This motion that passed allows the board an opportunity to review the local metrics and determine at its Thursday, Feb. 4, board meeting whether conditions warrant a return to a Plan B operation for K-12 or to remain in Plan C beginning Monday, Feb. 15.
