The Killian Family and RCG have announced a joint venture to renovate the Commodore Apartments at 215 East Chestnut Street.
The building, which was constructed in 1922 by Thomas Rollins, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a “pivotal” structure in the Chestnut Hill Historic District. The extensive, historically sensitive renovation is expected to begin in late spring. Asheville’s Rowhouse Architects is leading design efforts while Fearnbach History Services is providing historic consultation.
The planned renovation will maintain the building’s original count of 24 apartments and restore its historic common areas and façades, while also adding an elevator and other modern amenities. Updated features will include new energy efficient mechanical systems, in-unit laundry, basement storage, a roof deck, and historically accurate, energy efficient windows. The four-million-dollar project is expected to be completed in 2022, which also marks the building’s 100th anniversary.
The Commodore represents the third significant historic restoration project for the Killians. The family previously restored the Karl Von Ruck Estate and continue to do so in collaboration with RCG. They also received a Griffin Award for their 1992 renovation of the Jeter Pritchard House at 223 East Chestnut Street.
