Asheville Leaders Elected to Statewide YMCA Board

The North Carolina Alliance of YMCAs has elected YMCA of Western North Carolina (WNC) President and CEO Paul Vest to chair its board of directors for a one-year term.

In addition, Charles Frederick, Market Head-North Carolina for TD Bank, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the board.

Vest, a second-generation YMCA professional who has led the Asheville-based association since 1996, will oversee the implementation of the Alliance’s strategic plan to advance the Y’s mission across the state. “It is my great honor to chair one of the nation’s most active and influential YMCA coalitions. We understand the power of working together to advocate for community good, and I’m excited to continue building our collective impact.” Vest said.

Under Vest’s leadership, the YMCA of WNC has expanded to serve more than 100,000 people across the region through seven Y facilities, YMCA Camp Watia, health equity programming, and the state’s largest licensed afterschool childcare program. It also provides more than $4 million a year in financial assistance and subsidized services to the community.

Frederick, who has 40 years of banking experience across the state, brings his business lens to the work of the Alliance, as well as his past experience serving on the YMCA of Western North Carolina Board of Directors as Chief Volunteer Officer and other roles.

“It’s an honor to serve the Y in this new capacity at the statewide level,” Frederick said. “From playing youth basketball to working as a camp counselor to serving as a volunteer board member for my local Y for years, I know firsthand how important the Y is to each community it serves. I look forward to supporting this work.”

Vest succeeds outgoing chair Stan Law, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. The organization’s new vice chair is Lynn Lomax, president and CEO of the YMCA of High Point.

“NC YMCAs have filled so many critical community needs during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, from increasing our fight against food insecurity with local partners to providing remote learning sites statewide while schools were closed due to COVID,” said Sherée Vodicka, CEO of the NC Alliance of YMCAs. “Our board leaders will continue to guide our collective work to build stronger, healthier communities.”
