“As someone who started my parks and recreation journey working at my community center pool, I commend the hard work of the team that worked diligently to make sure local families can start enjoying the summer at a public pool,” says D. Tyrell McGirt, Director of Asheville Parks & Recreation. “Operating two aging outdoor pools in our mountain climate is challenging, but we are driven by the knowledge that our neighbors are happier and healthier when they can enjoy an array of public recreation experiences that bring people together.”

As Recreation Park Pool prepared to open for the season, staff discovered an area of possible delamination which could lead to unsafe swimming conditions. Following a professional assessment, the area was repaired, water filled the pool, and Buncombe County health inspectors inspected the chemical balance of the pool. In all, the pool’s season has been shortened by just the first two weekends.

The current public pool in Recreation Park was built in 1970 to replace the original aquatic centerpiece that was open from 1925-1956. Asheville Parks & Recreation also operates Malvern Hills Pool and Splasheville, a popular splash pad in Pack Square Park. Malvern Hills Pool has yet to open for the season as staff actively work to replace deficient safety equipment.
