The Asheville Art Museum invites you to join them on September 12 at 10:00 a.m. to explore the possibilities of volunteering for the only visual arts museum in Western North Carolina. Everyone is welcome, so bring a friend and come learn more! Docents, Special Events volunteers, volunteers for the Front Desk, Library volunteers, and volunteers for The Art of Wine Committee are needed.Docents Docents are educators trained to further the public's understanding of the collections of 20th and 21st century American art of the Asheville Art Museum. Docents, in addition to their function as guides, also conduct research. Docent positions, particularly at renowned institutions, are highly coveted as such positions are rarely available. If you are interested in art, art museums or art history and like to learn and share your experience by leading group tours with children and adults, this opportunity may be for you. You will meet experienced Docents and Museum staff at the Volunteer Recruitment, while learning more about our training program for museum guides. Prospective docents participate in an exciting training process, which teaches them good communication and interpretation skills, as well as introduces them to the Museums collection and its historical significance. Docents are provided with readings that expand on training sessions and work with experienced docents as they give their tours before ultimately conducting a tour on their own. Docents are kept up-to-date with continuous training and seminars. This is an involved and energetic group who invites you to join them. For more information please call 253.3227 ext. 120. Special Events The Museum hosts over 20 special events every year, including exhibition openings, art tours, loft tours, street festivals, the annual A Taste of Art and Wine wine tasting and much more. Volunteers are always needed and welcome to participate in making these events fun for everyone. Front Desk and Museum Shop The Museums front desk is the hub of operations. Front desk volunteers interact with Museum members, visitors, artists and other community members that come to the Museum. Front desk volunteers are vital to the Museums connection to the Western North Carolina community. Volunteers at the front desk have the opportunity to learn about everything that goes on at the Museum. In conjunction with activities at the front desk is involvement with the Museum Shop. The Shop is the heartbeat of the Museum, and is open to anyone walking through. It is a wonderful way for visitors to take home a piece of their Asheville Art Museum visit, and our volunteers are vital in helping assist visitors in finding what they are looking for and helping them have a pleasant Shop experience. Library The Museum library volunteers care for every aspect of the Museums library, including cataloging and covering books to add to the library and creating an inventory of library resources. The Art of Wine Committee Every year, the Museum hosts a wine tasting a silent auction to raise money for many public programs the Museum makes available to the Western North Carolina community. Every two years, the Museum hosts the Wine Auction Gala, which also provides vital operating support for the Museum and its public programs. The Art of Wine Committee is a group of volunteers that organize these incredibly successful events. If you are interested in special events planning and organization, this is the group for you!
