Be Our Guest! Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Opens the 62nd Season at Asheville Community Theatre

The enchanting musical Disney’s Beauty and the Beast opens the 62nd season at Asheville Community Theatre. Opening on Friday, September 14th at 8:00 pm, the musical runs for three weekends through September 30th, 2007. Performances are held on Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Asheville Community Theatre is located at 35 E. Walnut in downtown Asheville. On Opening Night, a complimentary champagne reception will be held in the lobby to which all patrons are invited.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is based on the Academy Award winning movie, and the stage version includes all of the songs from the film, as well as new songs written especially for the stage. The magical story of the beautiful Belle and the misunderstood Beast is perfect for audiences of all ages. From Belle’s eccentric father Maurice to the loutish and arrogant Gaston to the charming characters who inhabit the Beast’s castle, the musical is populated with vain villains, sociable servants and passionate protagonists.

“We are going all out with our production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” says Cate Foltin, Managing Director of Asheville Community Theatre. “The set is the most ambitious and majestic that we’ve ever constructed. The sheer grandness of this show will take your breath away!”

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is directed by Christopher Lynn with musical direction by Ginger Haselden. This marks Christopher Lynn’s Asheville Community Theatre directorial debut; he has performed the role of the Beast at Flat Rock Playhouse and has most recently co-directed West Side Story for HART. The set is designed by Jack Lindsay, with lighting design by Rob Bowen and costumes by Kate Russell. Choreography is by Lynne Meyer (West Side Story at HART).

The large cast includes both ACT veterans and newcomers. Rachelle Roberts makes her ACT debut as Belle and Tony Lance returns to the Mainstage after a 6 year absence in the role of the Beast. Joining them onstage are Payton Turpin (Once Upon a Mattress) as Cogsworth, Ruth Butler (Fiddler on the Roof, Annie) as Mrs. Potts, and Doug Hauschild (Once Upon a Mattress, The Wizard of Oz) as Monsieur D’Arque. Rod Leigh, Trevor Warden and Richard Blue are among the many newcomers to the Mainstage who are playing leading roles. Many area students are in the cast, as are local teachers, doctors, and other professionals.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors (over 60) and full-time students, and $12 for children ages 3-17.
