New Asheville Humane Society Animal Care Campus Now Open!

The Animal Care Campus is over 33,000 square feet of space dedicated entirely to animal welfare and education. This campus offers the highest level of animal care, animal control to ensure public health and safety, and the best hope for matching animals to the right loving home. At the same time, this high tech facility will train a workforce of veterinary technicians for employment across the community.

The campus also ensures our taxpayers the most efficient model of care because it affords the opportunity for animal control, the shelter, the vet tech program and the education/adoption center to work side by side and share resources.

This joint, cooperative effort consists of two buildings:

The new Buncombe County Animal Shelter was constructed by Buncombe County Government and has capacity for 205 sheltered animals including lost and found animals and administration. No animals will be adopted from this facility. Animals will be examined, treated and moved next door to the Asheville Humane facility for adoption. This facility also houses Buncombe County Animal Control and the A-B Tech Veterinary Medical Technology Program. This state of the art facility has an air ventilation system that issues fifteen fresh air exchanges per hour to prevent disease, safely separates sick animals and houses the euthanization facility.

Buncombe County Government contracts with Asheville Humane Society to operate the Animal Shelter. Asheville Humane Society raised $3.3 million to construct the separate Adoption & Education Center with private funds.

The second facility on the Animal Care Campus is the Asheville Humane Society's Adoption and Education Center. This facility was constructed by the Asheville Humane Society with private donations. This adoption facility showcases 24 dogs, 24 puppies, 18 cats and 18 kittens as well as a few small mammals like hamsters, guinea pigs, etc. The facility also houses the administrative offices of the Asheville Humane Society. This facility has doggie-condos that include outdoor runs to promote exercise, lined with disease-resistant doggie astro-turf. The facility has a retail shop and educational classroom space and areas for visitors to get to know the animals before adoption.
