NC Arboretum Hosts Dahlia Show at Garden Harvest Festival This Weekend

Dahlia's exuberant blooms provide a bold dose of color as autumn approaches. The North Carolina Arboretum will host a special, weekend event celebrating this time of year at The Visitor Education Center.

On Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16, The North Carolina Arboretum hosts a special weekend event celebrating dahlias. At the Carolina Dahlia Society's Annual Show, growers from across the mountains display hundreds of blossoms in rainbow colors and multi-bloom variety bouquets. Flowers are available for purchase, and Dahlia Society members offer advice and resources in the Education Center Auditorium.

While the Dahlia Show is the primary feature of the weekend, visitors will also enjoy art exhibits, and fun activities for the entire family. Weekend highlights are:

  • The Carolinas Dahlia Society Annual Show, Noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Hundreds of dahlia blossoms will be displayed, and information will be available on selecting and growing these favorite plants. Flowers will be available for sale as long as supplies last.
  • Art Exhibits in the new Baker Exhibit Center and Education Center 2nd Floor Gallery. Exhibits on display include "Around the World: Places, People and Plants ~ Watercolor by Ann Vasilik" and "Second Nature," a quilt exhibit incorporating nature photography.
  • Bonsai Volunteers in the Garden. Volunteers stationed in the Bonsai Exhibition Garden will answer questions about both the collection and the garden, and will share information about the Arboretum's upcoming Bonsai Expo in October.
  • Discovery Backpacks for Families. Pick up a backpack full of activities to help families explore the Arboretum trails. Backpacks are free and available on a first come, first served basis at the Baker Exhibit Center information desk.
  • Guided Trail Walk. Explore the late summer landscape with a naturalist! Trail walk leaves from the Baker Exhibit Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
All activities are free to the public; usual parking fees apply. For more information, please contact the Arboretum at 828-665-2492, or visit www.ncarboretum.org.

The mission of The North Carolina Arboretum is to cultivate connections between people and plants.
