North Carolina Arboretum September Events Feature Dahlias, Orchids, Fall Specialties


With the heat of summer fading fast, September at the North Carolina Arboretum is often that breath of fresh air we have been seeking during the hot and humid days of August. September tends to be a beautiful month in the mountains, with the weather still warm, but with increasingly breezy (and dry!) days and even cooler evenings. In September, the NC Arboretum continues with its normal schedule of guided and self-guided outdoor activities (brochures are available at the Visitor Center) as well as many programs that cater to fall gardening. Listed below is the Arboretum�s September schedule of special events.

Saturday, September 3 through Monday, September 5
Nature and Art for Kids.
Stop by the Visitor Education Center to make a handmade sketchbook before going on a scavenger hunt through the gardens in search of shapes, colors and textures. Noon to 4:00 p.m.

Tuesday, September 6
Twilight Garden Tours & Music in the Garden.
Enjoy the splendors of the summer landscape during twilight hours when the colors of the gardens are magical. The Savory Thyme Caf� will be open extended hours so that visitors can enjoy gourmet coffee and desserts while listening to guitarist Larry Anderson. NC Arboretum events and activities are free unless noted; no parking fee on Tuesdays. Tours start in the Visitor Education Center lobby.
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Savory Thyme Caf� Open; Music on the Veranda
5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Twilight Garden Tours

Saturday, September 10 through Sunday, September 11
Annual Carolinas Dahlia Society Show & Garden Harvest Festival.
This special weekend event features hundreds of show-stopping dahlia blossoms plus demonstrations, educational programs, family activities, guided walks, tours and live music. Flowers available for purchase while supplies last. NC Arboretum events and activities are free unless noted; usual parking fees apply.
Noon to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Tuesday, September 13
Bird Walk. Marilyn Kolton and Louis Dwarshuis of the Elisa Mitchell Audubon Society lead a morning bird walk. Walk begins at the Greenhouse Lobby. Bring binoculars! NC Arboretum events and activities are free unless noted; no parking fee on Tuesdays.

Thursday, September 15
What's Growing on at the Arboretum?
Arboretum Education Program Manager Julie Vidotto leads a walk highlighting new facilities under construction and garden improvements underway. Discover firsthand how the Arboretum is growing!
9:30 a.m.

Sunday, September 18
WNC Orchid Society Annual Auction.
This special event will include a live auction of over 100 orchids as well as a silent auction of unique plants and supplies. Information about growing and caring for orchids will be available throughout the day. Light refreshments will be provided.
Noon - Auction Preview
1:00 p.m. - Auction begins

Tuesday, September 20
Gardening in the Mountains: Lawn Care.
Join us for an informative talk on creating and maintaining a healthy lawn. Offered in cooperation with Buncombe County Cooperative Extension and regional Master Gardeners. NC Arboretum events and activities are free unless noted; no parking fee on Tuesdays.

Wednesday, September 28
Hemlock Wooly Adelgid: How Do We Save Our Trees?
This informative talk presents treatment options that will help preserve hemlock trees in the Appalachian Region. Program held in conjunction with Appalachian Tree Care. NC Arboretum events and activities are free unless noted; usual parking fees apply.

What's Growing on at the Arboretum?

The mission of The North Carolina Arboretum is to cultivate connections between people and plants.

The North Carolina Arboretum is located next to the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance ramp at Milepost 393. From I-26, take Exit 33 (previously Exit 2) and follow Blue Ridge Parkway signs for two miles to the entrance ramp. Arboretum grounds are open 7 days a week. Property hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., April-October and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., November-March. The Visitor Education Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from Noon to 5 p.m. Parking Fees: $6 per personal motor vehicle, $25 commercial vans and $45 tour buses. No parking fee applies for NC Arboretum Society members. All day Tuesday, parking is free for all visitors.
