Asheville Art Museum Hosts Passionate Collectors: Sonia and Isaac Luski

The Asheville Art Museum is delighted to present this exhibition of outstanding contemporary works of art representing unparalleled creativity in glass, wood and other media. Passionate collectors, Sonia and Isaac Luski are longtime patrons of the arts, and this exhibition is a marvelous overview of both regional and national trends in contemporary art and craft.

The Luski collection demonstrates a highly personal commitment not only to artists, but also to the crafts community, the state and the region. It is no exaggeration to say that their participation has been extremely influential to the evolution of art and craft in the Southeast in general and Western North Carolina in particular. There are a number of artists working in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, painting and printmaking included in this exhibition whose work is also part of the permanent collection of the Asheville Art Museum.

The Luskis are not only passionate collectors, but generous supporters of the arts, art organizations and artists. They have aided many artists struggling to establish their career through the purchase of their work, and have generously donated artworks to many organizations in the Southeast, including the Asheville Art Museum. The way Isaac and Sonia collect demonstrates their level of commitment to the artists and their work. They must connect with the artists on some level; they must be part of that artists life. . . There are many artists who have faced financial tribulation, only to have the Luskis make a major purchase at a crucial time. This patronage results in a collection that isnt totally about the objects; rather it is a collection that has many remarkable objects. . . all with the gift of association. This association is the most important aspect of the collectors philosophy. Andrew Glasgow, Executive Director of the Furniture Society, quoted in Passionate Collectors: Sonia and Isaac Luski.

Sonia and Isaac Luski moved to North Carolina from Cuba in the 1960s, bringing their enthusiasm and appreciation for the arts with them. They began collecting contemporary art and craft not long after, and soon began to visit western North Carolina and its artists on a regular basis. Through happy coincidence, the incredible explosion of talent and energy in the art glass movement which had Penland School of Crafts at its epicenter was simultaneous with the Luskis arrival. The heart of their collection is North Carolina glass, an unequalled selection of remarkable work. The collection as a whole is a deeply personal one, reflecting their taste, their many friendships, and their unerring eyes for excellence.

The exhibition includes work by renowned Western North Carolina and other important American artists. The Museum is celebrating the opening of this exhibition with a gala reception on Friday, July 19, from 6:00 8:00 pm; free for Museum members and invited guests; $6 per person for the general public.
