Winter holds a special beauty which emphasizes the silhouettes of many of our fine specimen trees. It's a good time to look for lesser known flowers. Watch for the Witch Hazel in December - It is the very last plant to flower in the garden.
Witchhazel is native to parts of North America. The first member to come to prominence in the garden is the variety Hamamelis virginiana, discovered growing wild in Eastern woodlands in the early 1700's. Brought to England 1736, it was immediately prized, not for its flowers, which are rather small, but for its late-in-the-year season of bloom. The Botanical Gardens is a non-profit, volunteer-operated organization that receives no city, state or federal funds. Maintenance of the Gardens is funded exclusively by memberships, donations, gift shop sales and fundraising events such as the Spring Plant Sale. Admission is free and parking is available on-site or nearby. The Botanical Gardens at Asheville is located near UNC-Asheville at 151 W.T. Weaver Blvd. For more information, call (828) 252-5190.
