Diana Wortham Theatre March Performances Feature Mainstage Series Events

The Diana Wortham Theatre, now considered one of the pillars of downtown Ashevilles vibrant and dramatic resurgence as a cultural arts/residential/commercial center, has steadily maintained a top-notch schedule of creative, imaginative, entertaining, and even educational events that draw crowds of varying interests to the Pack Square area. The theatres March 2005 schedule of Mainstage Series performances is just a sampling of what is available year-round at the intimate 500-seat venue.

Presented in association with UNCA Cultural and Special Events and the YMI Cultural Center, the spirited and deeply moving Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company will perform on March 18 and 19 at 8 PM. The dance company fuses traditional American modern dance with hip-hop and contemporary West African club dance in a magnetic and breathtaking performance. Evidence performs high-energy pieces that are emotional and vivid, to include a new work, ComeYe, inspired by WNC native and jazz celebrity, Nina Simone.

Free pre-performance discussions will be held both nights at 7 PM in The Forum at Pack Place, and will be led by Connie Schrader, head of the UNCA dance program. Audiences will gain insight into the realm of professional dance and dance performers.

Tickets for Ronald K. Brown/Evidence are $30 adults, $28 students/seniors, and $10 children.

On March 23 and 24, the Acting Company will present back-to-back performances of Shakespeares Two Gentlemen of Verona, a riotous romp about the bonds of friendship and fidelity, and Henry Jamess The Turn of the Screw, a provocative tale of suspense, horror, and psychological intrigue. The Tony Award-honored Acting Company celebrates over 30 years as one of the most respected and praised touring repertory theatres in the US, and delights audiences worldwide with productions of great classics together with the best of contemporary theatre.

Free pre-show discussions will be held each night at 7 PM in The Forum at Pack Place.

Two Gents-Shakespeare, Fun and Fluff, will be led by Dr. Mario DiCesare, Distinguished Professor State University of New York, and From the Armchair to the Balcony How a Novel Becomes a Play, led by Laura Facciponti, Head of the UNC Asheville Acting Program.

Tickets for the Acting Company performances are $30 adults, $28 students/seniors, and $10 children.

As part of the Mainstage Celtic Series, Battlefield Band will perform on Friday, March 25, at 8 PM. Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of today's Scottish cultural scene, Battlefield Band performs music of rare passion and joy. The Battlefield Band mixes old songs with new self-penned material and plays them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments, including bagpipe, fiddle, synthesizer, guitar, cittern, flute, bodhran, and accordion. The performance, presented in partnership with The Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College, is one that people of all ages will enjoy.

Tickets for Battlefield Band are $26 adults, $24 students/seniors, and $10 children.
